Have you ever thought that Piraeus is much more than a hectic port with crowds and ferries? It’s actually a city itself and a convenient seaside getaway just 20 minutes from the center of Athens! So let’s discover Piraeus and wander in its various districts, its ambiances and its history.
Experience available in English, French, Chinese
What we’ll do
Port of Athens as early as in antiquity, the major developments of Piraeus we can see today date back to the 19th century when the new independent Greek state became a reality. Thus, Piraeus is an excellent witness of the last two centuries of Greece’s history: industrial development, new urban planning, internal migrations, sub-culture, war damages, reconstructions and finally rejuvenation to establish itself as one of the main urban district of greater Athens.
We will find ourselves in the impressive metro station, strategic access point for visitors arriving from central Athens. After passing the port and its ferries, we will reach the busy streets of the city center, embellished with magnificent neoclassical buildings. The experience continues in the steep and quiet streets of the residential area of Kastella, on a hilltop, offering superb views on the sea, Piraeus, Athens and its Riviera. We will descend passing above the Mikrolimano marina, then we will finish along the seaside road to marina Zea, the main leisure port in Piraeus.
Good to know
Please, note that the end of the walk is a different place from the meeting point, for you to be able to enjoy the seaside walk, where you can find a few tavernas and cafés. To go back to the metro station, you can either walk, take a bus or a taxi.
Also take into consideration that the whole experience as it is described is approximately 6km walk, including some steep streets.
